LICHFIELD SALVER

This offertory salver, made for Lichfield Cathedral, depicts the six days of Creation. The panels show light and darkness, plants, sea creatures, birds, mammals, and Adam and Eve. The design is based on the cathedral's vaulting, and round the edge are six gargoyles. Silver and semi-precious cabochon stones, agate, amethyst, cornelian, garnet, iolite, moonstone, tourmaline.

LADY THATCHER'S BOWL

This bowl was presented to Mrs Thatcher by the 1922 Committee in 1989 to celebrate her ten years as Prime Minister. It is supported by a lion, dragon, unicorn and harp, representing England, Wales, Ireland and Scotland. Round the rim are national flowers, and a model of the door to number 10 Downing Street. Inconspicuous in the border is a tiny penguin, a reference to the Falklands.

This silver salt was commissioned by Bruno Schroder to give to Lord Cranborne (now Marquess of Salisbury) in thanks for a gift of rare breed pigs.

10 DOWNING STREET BOWLS

Made for the Silver Trust, a pair of bowls with oak trees. One bowl depicts a winter’s night with a unicorn, the other shows a summer’s day with a lion. Silver, parcel-gilt, with a variety of semi-precious cabochon stones. The winter bowl is set with cubic zirconia. Height 22.5cm (9 inches), diameter 26cm (10 1/4 inches).

Each year the new Prime Warden of the Goldsmiths’ Company commissions a major piece. This is Bruno Schroder’s. The unicorns and leopard come from the Company’s coat of arms, and the dragons represent the City of London. There is engraving around the foot of the salt. It is made from parcel-gilt silver, with a hand-blown blue glass bowl and spheres, matching blue champleve enamel, cabochon amethysts, and diamonds in the manes and tails of the unicorns.

This ceremonial salt was made for the Athenaeum club for the Queen’s Jubilee. Athena strides off to battle, her serpent following her. She is the goddess of the stormy night sky, shown in enamel above her. Athena’s owl perches on top of the salt. There is another owl, wings folded, on the end of the salt spoon. The piece is made of parcel-gilt silver, enamel, glass and white marble. There is engraving round the top edge. This salt now lives in a showcase made by Lord Linley.
